Just TODAY. . . Don’t WORRY about TOMORROW.
If you are like me not worrying about tomorrow can be challenging at times. We are told not to worry, to not be anxious. I don’t want to worry. I don’t want to be anxious and for the sake of this blog post I will assume you don’t want to worry and be anxious as well. Here are a few verses that most of us have heard before regarding this.
“So I tell you, don’t worry about every day life-whether you have enough food, drink, and clothes. Doesn’t life consists more than food and clothing?” (Matthew 6:25)
“So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” (Matthew 6:34)
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)
For me, much of my anxiety comes from worrying about the “what if’s”, the “tomorrow’s”, the future and what may or may not happen. It could be in my finances and wondering when my next listing may come or what the real estate market may or may not do. It could be with my kids and the worry about their future and the decisions they may or may not make and painful lessons they may have to learn. It could be in my marriage and the fear of forgiveness or grace “drying up” and/or desires not being met.
SO, HOW TO WE MOVE THROUGH LIFE WORRYING LESS AND DEALING BETTER WITH OUR ANXIOUS THOUGHTS?
Focus on TODAY. Just today. We are told tomorrow will have enough trouble, today’s trouble is enough, and that worrying will not “add a single moment to your life.” (Matthew 6:27). So, we must FOCUS on today. JUST TODAY. Day by day is a phrase that does not seem that positive but there is truth to it. I can do what I need to do today regarding my real estate business. Whether I see the “fruits” of the labor today or tomorrow I can just do TODAY. I can be a loving father to my kids today. Just this day I will be there for them and guide when guidance may be needed or love and listen when it may present itself to do so. . TODAY. In my marriage I can be grateful that I can love and serve unconditionally TODAY. I can be a good husband TODAY and move through with gratitude not want, TODAY.
Too often we look into our future and in doing so it creates worry and anxiety. I am not saying this is the case for all. Heck, sometimes dreaming and looking into the future can bring HOPE but we must be careful what our “looking” into our future looks like. Don’t we have enough for TODAY whether it is the amazing beauty in front of us or whatever current “heart posture” we feel at the moment? Always thinking at tomorrow may remove us from seeing what needs to be seen today. So, DAY by DAY.
Can I love my wife just today? Not tomorrow but TODAY? Tomorrow will be TODAY soon enough.
Can I focus on being a good father TODAY not worrying about or trying to control their tomorrow? Love them TODAY.
Can I appreciate the “clothes on my back”, the “shelter over my head”, and the food in the fridge TODAY? I can do that TODAY.
Can I do the little thing in my business TODAY and not worry about the results of tomorrow? Tomorrow will be in less than 24 hours and I can then do the little things that day.
Can I TODAY focus on God’s love and grace and look INTO HIS EYES today? Can I be and walk with HIM, Hand in HIS today and tomorrow do the same BUT FOR TODAY do TODAY.
You see, what may be a big problem in my life, and yours, is trying to live multiple days at once. Did God intend for us to live that way? I feel He just wants us to live Today and worry about tomorrow TOMORROW. Today is enough :)
